THREE STEPS TO OVERCOME LOW SELF ESTEEM
Mar 04, 2022Are you struggling with low self-esteem?
I’ve come to realize that it doesn’t matter who you are, what position or title you hold, or how much money you have in the bank, everyone battles with self esteem in one area or another at some point. Be it the way we look, an inability to handle crowds or a job interview, our lack of what we deem as fashionable or acceptable to society…whatever it might be, we ALL face things about ourselves that try to rob us of our self esteem.
The challenge with allowing low self esteem to take centre stage in our lives, is we inadvertently write ourselves off and then miss out on so much that life has to offer.
Here’s 3 Tips to Overcome Low Self Esteem
1. Recognize
Unless you are able to recognize your negative thought pattern, the cycle of low self esteem will continue to run rings.
If you are unable to recognize the negative thought pattern for yourself, have a loved one step in and help. Tell them that you want to overcome your low self esteem and ask what they believe is the driving force behind it. You might be shocked at the response so brace yourself. At the end of the day, I relish feedback because it means an opportunity for me to grow and change.
Recognize what thoughts feed your low self esteem. These thoughts are wrapped in negativity. Unfortunately when you struggle with low self esteem, it means that negative thoughts have become your default programming. Here’s the challenge: If you’re getting sick of the playlist you’re listening to, you have to search for an alternative playlist and then hit play.
Unless you are able to recognize your negative thought pattern, the cycle of low self esteem will just continue to run rings around you and you’ll never get to experience a new playlist.
2. Reject
Once you are able to recognize the negative thoughts that feed your low self esteem, the magic can begin. Here’s the amazing thing:
You hold the power to CHOOSE who you want to be.
No one else can choose this for you. Sure, you cannot control what happens to you, but you can control how you allow outcomes to affect you.
You’ve identified the negative thoughts that fester and feed your low self esteem. Thoughts like ‘I’m not good enough, I’ll never be able to achieve anything, my family is poor therefore I’ll be poor, I didn’t go to Uni so there is no way I would be able to launch a business’. All of these negative thoughts rob you of confidence, passion, zeal and truly living the life that you deserve.
Imagine these negative thoughts as if they were a little devil sitting on your shoulder. It’s time to flick that devil out the door. It’s time to stand up, reject the lies and then Tip # 3…
3. Replace
Replace those lies with a whole new narrative!! Say these words out loud:
‘I have decided that I am going to be the best version of myself and no one is going to stop me.’
Say it again. Only louder this time.
It does something on the inside right? The same way negative thoughts and words have a negative impact on what you believe, positive thoughts and words have a positive impact on what you believe. It’s not exactly rocket science. Where the battle lies, is between your two ears.
